Augustin Filipovic
(1931 - 1998)

Born in Davor, Yugoslavia, he studied in Zagreb, five years at the Artistic Lyceum and also at the Academy of Fine Arts (1950-52). He moved to Rome, where he taught at the Academy of Fine Arts (1952-54) and held solo shows until his departure for Canada in 1959. He settled in Toronto, where he held his first solo show at the Gallery Moos (1960). Critic Lawrence Sabbath noted his work for “Canadian Art” (1962) as follows, “He works in free form, portrait busts, and standing figures of large size which just get by in his tiny basement studio…. What emerges is the product of an artisan still testing himself and his medium in a variety of subject matter whose suggestion of style recalls Fazzini, Zadkine, Kollwitz, Moore….”
